Interviews (Jasmine):

1).What music genre do you listen to and what aspect of that genre makes you enjoy it more?
I listen to different genres; I like indie music as well as hip hop and pop music. However my favourite genre I would have to say is indie. I like it a lot because of the diversity. It is always something new and interesting you cannot get tired of it. Other genres are overplayed on the radio and I find that they all sound the same however if you listen to Indie music on the radio it is never the same band of music. One thing I do not like about indie music is the fact that there are so many bands and they are all male artists. The only female indie singers I have heard of is Meg and Dia. I like hip hop too, it is a weird combination hip hop and indie, but hip hop music has a good beat and some videos are really interesting.

2a).What is your favourite music video and your least favourite video and why?
My favourite song at the moment is probably Meg and Dia Monster. The beat is catchy and the song is meaningful and it gets stuck in your head because of the clever repetition of words. The music video is a combination of narrative and performance and it mashes so well together. It isn’t constantly one type of video so it doesn’t become boring after a while. I like the fact she is holding this heart which lights up as if to symbolise every heartbeat and she is watching everywhere with it because it symbolises the pain that was caused to her. I think it is a very clever video. I also like the performance part when they are just with their instruments singing and rocking out. I find it somewhat entertaining. My least favourite music video is probably Bedrock by Young Money. I really like the song it is quite catchy and has been played to death so it is stuck in your head. It is a stupid yet catchy song, but the video is so annoying and has no point to it. It is all about women flashing themselves and acting dumb. It is a very stereotypical video and women are portrayed like they are meat and nothing else and the men in the video are basically playing so many girls in the video. It is almost the same in all hip hop R’n’B videos, it is getting a bit boring.

2b).What other music videos have caught your eye in the past and why?
California girls by Katy Perry and Snoop Dog. It is a very unusual interesting video; it looks so fun and is so colourful. I like the whole idea and concept of the video. It is a video you cannot forget. The fashion in the video relates to the song, it is such a fun song. It is catchy. The editing and animation in the video stand out. It is made brilliantly and its whole concept was to be different and entertain and it certainty did that. One of the most eye-catching different videos.

3a).Who is currently your favourite band/artist and why?
Currently I love Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, they are such unusual artists and they aren’t scared to go crazy and do something completely different. They are very unique and have their own style which I absolutely think is amazing. They make their video’s and song so meaningful or completely crazy which I love, you can never get bored of them, that always have somethingdifferent to share with us with is absolutely great. They also are always coming up with new music and new songs, so you never have to wait. They are such innovative artists and they are the reason I like pop music, in my opinion they revived pop music.

3b). Is there something unique about this artist that makes them stand out to you? (Can you explain what it is and how it appeals to you?)
The thing that is unique about them like I said before they always have new ideas and aren’t afraid to push the envelope. They sing with passion, they never leave you bored something new always come out and this truly shows their passion for music, they never leave you in anticipation because they can’ wait to go out there do something different and make people smile. Their deep passion for what they do is very unique and their music videos are so out there that you cannot compare them to any other artist on the market. They have different styles and aren’t just another carbon copy singer who follows the trends. They set their own trends.

4).What type of characters do you like to see in a music video and why?
I like to see something emotional. As long as the character portrays emotions in the song well, then I cannot complain. I like music that makes you feel emotional, therefore as all music has some sort of emotion in it, I like to see the character in the video really enhance and emphasis that. Also I would prefer the artist to be in the video, I feel it makes it that extra bit personal because it is their song. I feel they are the only ones who know what they want the song to bring across to the audience; therefore I think it would work best if the artist was the main character in the music video.

5). In a song, which hold more importance to you the lyrics or music or both and why?
Both, in s song the lyrics are essential but the music has to be fitting to the lyrics emotions. The music enhances feeling and emotions in the lyrics and makes you feel that bit more involved and enticed. They are both equally important in order to make a successful song which the audience can relate to.

1).What music genre do you listen to and what aspect of that genre makes you enjoy it more?
I enjoy listening to all different genres; it just depends on the lyrics and music of the song, if it is interesting and exciting I will listen to it. However I do find myself mostly listening to pop and R’n’B, I think it is probably because I find these genres are more calm, because I do not like many loud rock songs. I find that they sound like noise, but it depends. I like R’n’B because it usually has a good beat and it is quite exciting, yet I do find that most songs in this genre are all the same. I really like pop and I think this is mostly after people like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and John Mayer came into the picture. I find certain artists can make songs blossom and can show so much emotion. I think I like these genres because of the artists is Lady Gaga was to make a rap I would probably love it to. I think it is down to the artist

.2a).What is your favourite music video and your least favourite video and why?
At the moment my favourite music video is Jessie J’s Who is laughing now. I find the video epic, one of the bests it is so fitting to the lyrics. The beat is good and I like the use of children in a classroom. It also portrays problems that happen in today’s culture such as bullying in schools. It is so interesting it also show the reactions of children today. I also love the fact that Jessie J plays so many characters in the video, she adds a sense of humour to the video, and it is very nicely done. I also like the cutaways to her in the class room singing it adds another aspect and makes it less boring. However I think the use of children is the best part. Also the fact that the girl looks like a mini Jessie J and has the same attitude, you can take the song in so many ways. The music video I least like is Cher Lloyd Swagger Jagger. The fact that I hate the song may influence my opinion on the video but I find it very tacky and badly made. It has no depth to it. I especially do not like the scenes where she is signing without the dancing. It is a boring video and has nothing different that stands out about it.

2b).What other music videos have caught your eye in the past and why?
I like Pixie Lott’s song and video All about Tonight. I find the video very entertaining. I like the colours and lighting in the video. It is easy to dance to but it has a good concept because in the video she is dancing, it is mostly her dancing and singing but it matches the lyrics and music. It is a very catchy song and I love watching the video to it. I like the shots used the close-ups of different parts of her body that hold importance to the lyrics. I also like the beginning when the town is lit up and you can see shadows of her lips and legs fading in and out so it collides nicely. It is very thoughtfully done and really stands up it is a very good idea and really adds another dimension to the song, and t is constant to the song, it makes is so much more interesting. It is very nicely edited.

3a).Who is currently your favourite band/artist and why?
I currently like Adele. I thing she has a very soulful voice and when she sings her songs are so meaningful, you can relate to them which moves you. I like her because of the love and emotions she puts into her music. She also has the talent which is why I like her. She has an interesting voice. And the instruments she uses in her music vary which makes the song sound more interesting. She is someone you can’t wait to hear.

3b). Is there something unique about this artist that makes them stand out to you? (Can you explain what it is and how it appeals to you?)
Her voice is very unique; she has a beautiful husky subtle voice which fills the room with emotion. It appeals to me because I love songs with emotion and people who sing about what means a lot to them as they can truly put emotions into it as they have felt the emotions before. I love the fact her voice is like an instrument you don’t need any distractions like equipment wise. I also love the fact that she sounds amazing live, she doesn’t need to be auto tuned her voice is what you look forward to. She doesn’t need all these facades to make her interesting.

4).What type of characters do you like to see in a music video and why?
I like characters that portray the song with the emotion it is meant to have. I like the artist to be the main character I find it more interesting as it shows you what they wanted it to be like. I think an interesting unique video can only be portrayed if you truly understand the lyrics therefore since it is the artist’s song I think they are the only ones who can put justice to their song. Therefore I would prefer the singer to be the artist.

5). In a song, which hold more importance to you the lyrics or music or both and why?
I would say both because the music emphasis the lyrics emotion. However if I was to hear a song that had amazing lyrics and not the best of beat it would be okay, but if it was the other way around it would be a massive put off. Saying that there are certain songs you can take it the music is good. I like songs that lyrics match the beat. If it doesn’t match I can’t listen to it but if the lyrics aren’t emotional but catchy and the music matches it then I do not mind but I wouldn’t consider songs like that m favourites. I love songs with realistic, emotional lyrics and music to match which emphasised the lyrics.
